The Complete Comedies & Tragedies of Shakespeare · 1944

A little library in a box.

Four volumes of Shakespeare’s comedies and tragedies, published by Random House in 1944 - right in the middle of a world war. The books are small, handsome things, dressed in green cloth and gathered together in their original slipcase.

I love the way these look on a shelf. Their faded, gilt type down the spine. The vintage graphic design on the slipcase.

Inside, the illustrations are wonderfully of their time —black and white work by Fritz Kredel and Warren Chappell, with notes and a glossary tucked into the set.

The stories? All the classics. Macbeth. Romeo and Juliet. Hamlet, As You Like It. A whole big world, just waiting on a shelf.

The books with slipcase measure 5.25” w X 7.75” h. The books themselves are in good used condition, while the slipcase has wear and light damage. Overall, this collection is in good, vintage quality.
